Sternschnuppen sind Leuchterscheinungen, welche von in die Erdatmosphäre eindringenden Meteoroiden erzeugt werden. Meteoroide sind meist kleine Metall- oder Gesteinskörner aus dem interplanetaren Raum. Wegen ihrer enormen Geschwindigkeit von etwa 11,2 bis 72 km/s verdampfen die meisten in etwa 80 Kilometer Höhe durch Luftreibung. Dabei ionisieren sie die Luftmoleküle, was helle Leuchtspuren hervorruft. Nur wenige erreichen die Erde.
Im volkstümlichen Aberglauben vieler Länder hat jemand, der zufällig eine Sternschnuppe am nächtlichen Himmel sieht, einen Wunsch frei. Jemandem einen Stern vom Himmel zu holen bringt seine nicht in Worte zu fassende Liebe zum Ausdruck.

Shooting stars are luminous effects which are created by meteorite that entered the earth atmosphere. Meteorites are mostly small metals or rocks out of the interplanetary space. Because of its high speed of about 6 to 44 mps, most of them evaporate in about 263.000  feed  altitude through air friction. Throughout this process the air molecules ionize and this turns out to bright tracers. Only a few find their way down to earth.
